With his replicas of large historic racing schooners Dutchman Ed Kastelein has played a pivotal role in the renaissance of the classic yacht as it is now taking place. Over the past 30 years he has built 3 schooners, one new design and then two replica’s. The first was Zaca a te Moanna from a design by Olivier van Meer, then Eleonora which was originally designed by Nathaniel Herreshoff in 1910 and then the three-master Atlantic from a William Gardner design. He is now building a 3rd replica and this is of the legendary racing schooner Ingomar from 1903 that was also designed by Herreshoff. Pieter van der Aa was commissioned to build the 5 deckhouses and 2 sliding hatches of this striking yacht, including a unique round deckhouse which sits above the salon which is also round.

Nowadays a construction like this would be digitalised from the old drawings and machine cut. Pieter of course preferred to do it in the traditional manner by working directly from the original scaled drawings. In this way he feels he can recreate the original style and finish truer to nature than from a computer generated drawing. All hatches are made of solid mahogany, except for the round deckhouse. This has been laminated up from 15 layers of 4 mm thick Sipo Mahogany which in the end gives a thickness of 2 7/8 inch. This is exactly the same as on the original drawings from 1903. The whole construction is topped by a striking ring frame with 12 windows that will be protected by a wooden framework with brass rods later.

The inlays on the roofs of the deckhouses are teak.

The art of a true artisan carpenter is to build something new that immediately has the patina of the original subject. Once Ingomar is completed these deckhouses will be a striking addition to this extraordinary yacht.
